Origins and History of the Washington University School of Medicine

The proud history of medical education at Washington University began in 1891 when the University affiliated with the independent St. Louis Medical College and established the Medical Department of Washington University. Eight years later the other prominent independent medical school in St. Louis, the Missouri Medical College, joined the University. Over the ensuing years the Washington University School of Medicine has become one of the leading medical institutions in the nation.
