In Her Words

Letter from Julia C. Stimson to Lucille S. Spalding, January 12, 1942

Base Hospital 21, an army hospital unit organized by the American Red Cross in anticipation of the United States entry in the First World War, was comprised largely of doctors and nurses from Barnes Hospital and the Washington University School of Medicine. Its successor unit, the 21st General Hospital, served with distinction during the Second World War. It also was largely drawn from the staffs of the medical school and its affiliated hospitals. Julia C. Stimson, superintendent of nurses and director of the university’s Training School for Nurses, served as Base Hospital 21’s first chief nurse. She wrote this letter of congratulations and encouragement to Lucille S. Spalding, the newly appointed chief nurse of the 21st General Hospital, in January 1942.
