From the 1850s to the turn of the century, there had been periodic attempts to organize healthcare services specifically for the Jewish community of St. Louis. An organization was incorporated in April 1891 with a board consisting of eight men and five women. Land was purchased and a constitution adopted, but little else was accomplished. In early 1901 Mrs. Rebecca Kahn invited Gertrude Mathes, Mrs. Julius Weil, and Ida Kohn to join her in raising funds to build a hospital to meet the urgent health needs of the growing Jewish population in St. Louis. The four women approached Elias Michael, a merchant and civic leader, who agreed to contribute $10,000. This in turn stimulated other donors; the women raised over $30,000. The following year the Jewish Hospital of St. Louis, a three-story, 30-bed hospital building opened at 5415 Delmar Boulevard.
