About the Exhibit

“That Was Then - An Architectural History of the Washington University Medical Center” illustrates the growth of the medical center over the past 100 years using photographs, blueprints, and other materials from the Bernard Becker Medical Library’s archival collections.

Originally on display at the Becker Library in 2019, this online exhibit recreates much of the original physical exhibit. As the medical center is a continuing work in progress, the online exhibit has been updated to reflect some more recent construction. However, it does not represent the entire medical center, nor much of the campus's remarkable growth since 2020.

“That Was Then - An Architectural History of the Washington University Medical Center” was a physical exhibit originally displayed in the Drs. Helen H. and Robert J. Glaser History of Medicine Gallery on the 7th floor of the Bernard Becker Medical Library from May 13, 2019 through August 16, 2019. It was curated by Philip Skroska with editing and graphic design work by Laura Swofford. This digital exhibit was created by Philip Skroska in March 2025.
