| In June 1908 a wealthy St. Louis businessman, George D. Barnard, donated $100,000 to the St. Louis Skin and Cancer Hospital association for the establishment of a cancer hospital that provided free care. The 44-bed Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital was located at 3427 Washington Avenue and was associated with both the Washington University and St. Louis University Schools of Medicine. The trustees of the Barnard Free Skin and Cancer Hospital sought to affiliate fully with Washington University in late 1940. A lawsuit brought by the attorney general of Missouri questioning the right of Barnard’s trustees to affiliate solely with Washington University delayed the merger, however in 1952 the affiliation was completed. In October 1954 a new 5-story, 40-bed hospital was opened on the Washington University Medical Center campus next to the David P. Wohl, Jr. Memorial Hospital. |
