Joseph Lister's article on the antiseptic principle in surgery, 1867
“On a new method of treating compound fracture, abscess, etc. with observations on the conditions of suppuration” was a series of five articles by Joseph Lister (1827-1912) published in The Lancet in 1867. These articles outlined Lister’s work on the antiseptic principle in surgery. Lister believed that bacteria could enter wounds causing infection and disease; thus it was necessary to kill the bacteria already in wounds and to apply surgical dressings infused with some anti-bacterial substance. Carbolic acid was used as the antiseptic agent.
