Funeral of General Michie, Base Hospital 21, Rouen, France, 1918
Brigadier General Robert E. Lee Michie was the only American general officer to die in France during World War I. Michie, commander of the 53rd Infantry Brigade, died of a heart attack on June 4, 1918 while traveling by train between Le Havre and Rouen. The funeral was held two days later under the direction of Colonel Borden S. Veeder, commanding officer of Base Hospital 21.
