German prisoners on convoy duty, Base Hospital 21
German POWs were used during the day on convoy duty carrying patients on stretchers. American enlisted men served on “stretcher duty” as well – only non-coms, clerks and cooks were exempted. The wooden huts, built during the winter and spring of 1917-1918, replaced the original tents used as hospital wards. The sandbag fortifications around the huts were erected in June 1918 to protect the wounded during air raids.
