German POWs were used during the day on convoy duty carrying patients on stretchers. American enlisted men served on “stretcher duty” as well – only non-coms, clerks and cooks were exempted. The wooden huts, built during the winter and spring of 1917-1918, replaced the original tents used as hospital wards. The sandbag fortifications around the huts were erected in June 1918 to protect the wounded during air raids. |
