Blackpool, England, May 1917
Part of the 6 miles of beach on the Irish Sea in Blackpool, England. After landing in Liverpool, the enlisted men of Base Hospital 21 were sent on to Blackpool, where they were instructed in the rudiments of army training. The 518-foot Blackpool Tower (based on the Eiffel Tower) is in the distance. Blackpool became a major seaside resort in the 19th century for the working classes of Lancashire and Yorkshire. In 1879, Blackpool became the first place in the world to have electric street lighting.
